"... they will never be trusted again."

I think this, in a very fundamental way, is why it will all be different going forward.

I knew some people who had very odd behavior because of the Great Depression: they saved old light bulbs, old newspapers (piles and piles), everything. This was 50 years after the recovery.

The above quote brings to mind what a friend said on Saturday. She said she and her husband "did what they were supposed to" about investing their 401k plans, and they have been royally busted up. She said that they have come to think of that money as "... years and years of saving, just gone."

Will these people be willing to be burned again? Not bloody likely. I don't know how the collective behavior will alter in the future, but I know it will not involve trusting the government nor Wall Street nor big banks nor perhaps anything else that is 'establishment.' There will be millions of people looking for some way to protect at least part of their future. They will be looking for a way out of the box.

And, what do you know... all those entities that have crushed the millions of bugs below them have worked diligently for the past decade to create the appearance of 'fringe' with respect to investing in one such alternative: gold. Not just naked shorting by banks etc., but millions of ounces for sale year after year by central banks grooming half the planet that fiat was the only game in town. And now we have seen the endgame of their plan, and it's beyond ugly.

We are in the 3rd inning, just barely past 'numb' that they have been royally screwed. We have yet to see 'angry' and we certainly have not seen 'acceptance' when I think the collective strategies will be altered for an entire generation.

But partly we are there -- savings rate is up, buying 'stuff' is down. But the looking around for a permanent better way (to their minds) has barely even started.
