Titanic hits theaters — other notable flix include The Full Monty, Good Will Hunting, and L.A. Confidential;
Ellen DeGeneres outs herself;
Eric Clapton wins a Grammy for Change the World
Skynet launched a nuclear attack on mankind;
J. K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter is published in the U.K.
Princess Diana, Jacques Cousteau, John Denver, Mother Theresa, and James Stewart all die.

Oh, and the Dow Jones Industrials hit 7,100.
