The Arab development agenda that is inevitably hijacked by violence

By Thomas P.M. Barnett

NEWS ANALYSIS: "At Arab Gathering on Development, the Talk Is All About Gaza," by Michael Slackman, New York Times, 22 January 2009.

Pathetic really. Hamas and Tehran determine the development non-agenda for the region. Estimates are somewhere between 50 and 100 million jobs need to be created across the next 20 years to keep the region from exploding with the youth bulge that now works its way through societies. The low mark is just to keep the un/under-employment of today at the same level. The high mark is what constitutes real advance. There's your exit strategy, America: 100 million jobs. Or you can kid yourself that "getting off oil" is the real answer.
