NASA's new Orbiting Carbon Observatory, which was designed to map sinks and sources of carbon in Earth's atmosphere, failed to reach orbit after its launch from Vandenburg Air Force Base in California early Tuesday morning. According to a statement from NASA, a protective clamshell covering the satellite on the unmanned Taurus rocket failed to separate. The extra weight kept the satellite from reaching orbit.
