The entitlements may be excessive, but as I pointed out they are not something that is strongly under the presidents control. If you want to blame a president for them you should blame the president at the time the laws where enacted which mostly means FDR and LBJ, but Bush II joined in as well with the drug program.

As for defense, building up a military after years of neglect, and then helping to end the cold war, allowing for a large amount of future savings, isn't excessive spending IMO.
