SubterraCom Provides an Update on its SubterraMine Pilot Installation VANCOUVER, BC – January 12, 2009 – SubterraCom Wireless Solutions ("SWS"), a wholly owned subsidiary of iPackets International, Inc. ("iPackets") (OTC: IPKL), is pleased to provide an update on its pilot installation of its mine-safety wireless tracking, monitoring and communication system, SubterraMine.
In December 2007, SWS teamed-up with one of the largest US-based coal producers to deploy its SubterraMine end-to-end mine-safety system at one of the coal producer’s longwall operations located in West Virginia. The pilot installation includes over 50 802.11a/b/g radios covering an underground area comprising of approximately 30,000 feet (Primary Escapeway and Alternate Escapeway).
During the past 12 months, SWS has accomplished a number of milestones at the pilot site including:
Achieved underground spacing of Subterra-ZAP units (Zone Access Points) to a distance of 3,000 feet apart.
Demonstrated network alternate path/redundancy/self-healing feature by powering down all underground Subterra-ZAPs and showing the network re-routes traffic to other on-line Subterra-ZAPs and self-heals itself on power-up.
Underground testing of a new voice phone, based on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, and achieved communication with a distance of 2,800 feet from last Subterra-ZAP location. This device is still in the development stage.
Released a new version of the PDA software that provides PDA users the ability to run the Subterra-VU location and display map on the PDA. This allows foremen and supervisors to track and monitor miners while they are underground. The tracking and monitoring is similar to what dispatchers see aboveground.
Implemented and tested new features for the Subterr-M8 model 810T two-way text device. One such feature is the direct communication between crew members via the text device.
Underground demonstration of a third-party heads-up display unit that can mount to a miner’s hard hat offering full real-time two-way audiovisual conversation while transmitting real-time high quality video images. This device can assist in a mine-rescue / emergency response situation.
Added a number of software features to its Subterra-VU monitoring software, that were requested by the hosting partner, which resulted in the release of Subterra-VU version 2.1.8.
Fine-tuned overall system operation, and enhanced its underground tracking algorithms.
Demonstrated the system to a number of prospects, domestic and international partners, and MSHA representatives.
