I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Warren Buffet is famous for saying that J.D. Rockerfeller and his tycoon type friends in the 19th century, despite their incredible wealth, didn't even enjoy central heating and air conditioning that a lot of Americans in the 21st century take for granted and is within reach of many middle class families. Sure there are people who can't afford these luxuries and those who have been pushed to the margins in our manufacturless society, but all in all, our standard of living is much higher than it was in past decades. Get sick, we have antibiotics. Need to see a speak to relative who lives in a different part of the country, we can give them a call. Want to write a letter to a friend, you can use a computer at the library to send them an e-mail.

I think we focus too much on this month's or quarter's economic numbers and lose sight of the fact that as a whole we are a lot better off than some of our past generations. Need to prepare your taxes, no need for an accountant, just a PC and a tax preparation program. Sick? Figure out what might be the problem on WebMd before you go to a doctor. We have a lot at our disposal that improves our lives in ways past generations couldn't even imagine.
