Not to any great degreem, at least not on this planet.

In some cases he may have been able to manipulate their reporting to an extent, as could other political operatives, but they never took their marching orders from him, and often wrote articles critical of the politicians and policies he supported or was associated with.

Bush didn't get that much of a pass early on, esp. if by early on you mean pre-9/11. Even in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 when the response was mostly our country pulling together after a murderous attack, Bush was criticized for not immediately heading to the white house and such.
