We keep our butter, the stick we are using, in a drawer in the kitchen. I hate hard butter. People think that is strange but we used to have cats and if it was left on the counter, well it would be licks of butter. Mind you Vancouver is not outrageously hot in the summer. We also keep our thermostat down so we wear sweaters outside of summer.

A good part of the fridge energy appears as heat in the kitchen and equations don't take that into consideration. I'm also wary of too many CFL bulbs. Use them in outside light fixtures, and also hallway lights but I don't like reading by them. regular incandescent bulbs produce heat and a home needs heat at leat 9 months of the year and in the summer you need less lights.
