If Chrysler had been gone in to chapter 11, it may have shown people that car companies can go in to chapter 11 and survive (blunting one of the pro-bailout arguments you here now). If it had gone completely bust, then it would have reduce the overcapacity in the sector, freed up those resources for more productive uses, and maybe even focused the minds of the auto manufactures management and unions in positive ways.
