MM, Here's an interesting brief history of the USA'S largest bills: purpleslinky.com

In the early 70's my brother and I wanted to give a special gift to a family member of a few $1000 bills. We each tried several different banks in Massachusetts and NYC. We were told that those bills were no longer in print and not available in any bank, and we would have to use $100's instead. Anytime one was deposited or otherwise presented to a bank, they were redeemed to the Feds and replaced by smaller bills. The idea was to make it more difficult for Americans to secretly remove cash from the country.
