I suppose it depends on how you define liberal, but liberal Democrats (and also Democrats in general) tend to get more votes from the less educated and the relatively poor, and the highly educated (and maybe, but I'm not sure, the mega-rich). While Republicans tend to do better with people in the middle in terms of education, and I believe to a lesser extent in the middle on income levels.

I'm particularly sure about this in terms of educational levels. PhD's and high school dropouts tend to vote for Democrats, while Republicans win by a bit in between.
