I've lived in the North, and at least borderline in the South. I've seen more racism in the North.

The South had more official and legal racism long ago. Obviously you had slavery very long ago, then you had Jim Crow. The north didn't have either to a great extent (there where for some time some slaves in the Northern states, but except for the border states they abolished slavery long before the south, also there was some official discrimination, but not like Jim Crow), but maybe the fight against the official racism helped suppress future racism in the south. I've seen more racist comments, and casual racism in the New York area, then I've ever seen in VA.
