I haven't had a lot of luck in the other category lately, but I've had a good run in this category the past couple of nights:

Hosmer Cabernet Frank 2006 ($14.79): Cherry rhubarb flavors. Clean, well balanced. When I tasted it before dinner I thought it was a decent wine, but I was afraid it wouldn't stand up to the food (Italian sausage with roasted fennel and onions). Boy was I wrong. Once paired with the food, it opened up and sang. This is from a Finger Lakes winery and will probably be hard to find outside of upstate NY. (Their Riesling, at $12.00, is also an excellent value).

Domaine Rimbert St. Chinian Les Travers 2007 ($13.99): Domaine Rimbert has been getting some buzz in the blogosphere, so I picked up a bottle of their entry level red to give it a try. It's got that saddle aroma, with some plum mixed in and morphs to a very nice plum, licorice finish. This should definitely benefit from one or two additional years in the bottle.

BTW, these wines check in at 12 and 12.5 per cent alcohol respectively. Yes, it can be done folks. I realize that these are both from cooler climates, but I find it hard to believe that winemakers in the warmer climes couldn't manage to keep their wines in the 14% range if that's what they really wanted to do.
