if we called our cousin in canada it was ring 13... on a party line of about twenty families.. no dial... when we visited the phone rang all night and then someone would jump up to answer the phone.. i assume they listened for ring 13, how they knew?

when my wife wanted to call Galway Ireland, she would write to her mother, identify the time and day of the week. she would call the post office at that time. the post man would pass the phone out through the window. mom biked a few miles into town to the post office to get the call.
