This after leading the country through two finance driven disasters.

That's where the Rand-ish "the market will save us" argument falls flat now. There is no conceivable way that what is left of the US financial and manufacturing sectors can magically find their feet on their own and regain their previous level of prosperity. They failed, and wrecked their own foundations in the process.

So the way forward has to include a large government role for several years to come. Arguments to the contrary might make sense in an abstract way, but I don't see the practical application for now. Doing nothing would have meant allowing Citigroup to collapse, taking most of its customers and investors down with it.
