Gosh, that brought back memories. The first telephone I can remember was mandatory because my dad was a state patrolman and on call all the time. This was the very late 1930's. Our number was Hazeltine 246-J. My brother and I were given strict orders to NEVER touch that black thing that sat on a small table in the long hall way, about in the center of the house. When I was about 5 or 6 my dad let me call a cousin in downtown Denver (we lived in a suburb north of the city). When I heard "Operator" I dutifully told her I wanted "East 6636" and was soon talking to my cousin. That was some 67 years ago and I can remember it like it was last week.
