It might be an unfair criticism -- it was developed in MUMPS which was a language developed in the 60s specifically for health care software development. But the operative term is "60s".

Some people have taken the VA ("VISTA") system and made something out of it. But it lacks the sensibility required of a system that would be used in an office full of minimally educated staff, which is the lowest common denominator you have to accommodate.

I think that's what makes EMR such a challenge -- you have to accommodate users with a huge range of knowledge and experience. What works well for a physician who is well-versed in disease processes and nomenclature may not be so good for persons who have minimal educations. When you think about it, that is one of the difficult hurdles.
