Another good stock screening site that's free is stockscreener.com which is a Hoover database screener.
Personally, I prefer Windows on Wallstreet Pro 5.0 and would probably recommend it over MS Win for a beginner. I've used it for nearly 3 years now and have found it to be easy and intuitive to use. I know others will tell you that MS Win has more capabilities, but I've never run into a formula yet that I couldn't write in WOW (help me out here Andy....that's right isn't it?) and it has an incredible backtesting system built in to it that is a must for seeing if the formulas that you wrote really work. There's also the indicator search called "Smart Scan" that I use to screen for stocks that meet certain criteria.

WOW works with a number of data feeds including TC2000 which is reasonably inexpensive and has some features of it's own like the RS rankings in it (last time I tried it anyway) that are useful. You can use this data directly from TC2000 in WOW without having to do fancy imports and other such time wasting chores and spend more time writing formulas instead. Also, WOW comes with a CD that has historical fundamental data as of the last quarter reported that you can screen for fundies as well although the info is somewhat out of date at times, but it's a starting point anyway.

If you'd like to see some examples of charts using WOW, you can go to my web site and look at the market direction charts that I have there. They called for a market correction on 10/15/97 (Wednesday). So far, it's proven to be correct...again. The site is at members.aol.com

Good luck and hopefully you won't find this to be as addicting as I have over the years....

If you'd like to see my whole trading system, it's at members.aol.com

This is just my trading system and not any formulas. I would be glad to share a few of my better scan formulas with you and others if you like.
