because of the 68% portfolio hit, the recession and all that jazz, i threw out the idea of a new house in a better school district, a new car (mine is 6+ years old...), a mistress, mcintosh equipment, or the new nikon d3x.

so, around my birthday, i rewarded myself that denon rcd-cx1 sacd/receiver and the denon ah-d7000 headphone which works amazingly well together. you may laugh, but same brands don't work in tandem most of the time.

the remaining part is to see how my new paradigm atoms (<$250) works with the rcd-cx1.

i'll set it up in william's room.
been trying to get him off the ipod cans for a while now.

one really awful thing resulting from the success of the aapl ipod is the slow destruction of the audiophile saloons around town. there just are not that many anymore. most are now pushed out into the burbs of nyc. the major mail order outlets are still there with headphone related having any sort of growth.

in that segment, tremendous improvements have been made and a crazy amount of selection in the >$500 headphone class.

just now, grado has announced the ps1000 at $1695 with a wood/metal casing. this is john grado's answer to the recently introduced sennheiser hd800 which was the rage of ces09, at $1395

those are not volume killers and i do see final prices coming down. still, the headphone forums are very excited! i would be too if i had not bought the denon ah-d7000.
