Metacomet: If you trade a lot and negotiate with Ameritrade you can get $6.00 a trade. The problem with Canadian is if the Canadian is not listed on Amex and you are buying directly from TSX you have to add 1/2 cent or so on the bid, I believe it is, for their dealer on the Canadian end. So you pay more. This the case with most brokers in USA based on my experience.

By the way do not buy any thing from Ameritrade, other than trading services. Many of their clients got frozen in RYPQX which Ameritrade sold to retirees as super safe. TD then told their customers, some of who had their life savings in the account, tough luck, your problem. Right now they have gotten back around 80% of their funds and TD approach is still the same: your problem.
