You didn't ask me, but there was a recent National Geographic about the environmental aspect of it.

Man, it kinda looks like strip mining squared. Sounds like the concerns on the holding ponds are overblown, but they gotta tear up a LOT of earth to squeeze out that barrel of oil. They also need to come up with a cleaner way to get the heat source for the process, or they're going to come under fire for the carbon intensity of the process.

I know we NEED some oil, but I still believe we need a lot less than we're consuming right now. Of course, I ride my bicycle everywhere I possibly can, and I don't mind if that means a 10-mile ride in the rain, so I may not be your representative Merkan...
