Robert Lineback, Semiconductor Business News techweb.com Excerpt: Government grants and subsidies certainly played a key role in AMD's decision to build its first offshore wafer-processing plant in Dresden, Germany. The chip maker negotiated guaranteed bank loans and $550 million in grants and subsidies from the governments of Germany and Saxony. It will build an 8-inch wafer fab to turn out AMD's K7 microprocessors beginning in early 1999. During the next 10 years, $1.9 billion in investments are earmarked for the Dresden site, which could also be expanded. GM
