Gold and Silver standards are the ONLY to keep the crooks semi-honest, otherwise they will inflate the currency to produce a boom for the gratification of the here and now and the penalty for that is borne by following politicians, not me. I say semi-honest because even when there was a Gold Standard, guess, what they still print 50% more money than there was Gold in reserves, in both the 1920's and in the 1960's.
