I loved Volcker's 'double-speak' calling gold an artificial constraint - exactly the opposite of gold being the only real constraint to political means...
My guess is that the only way out of the U.S. deficit is to eventually allow hyperinflation to pay off the debt in cheaper dollars - so it's only a matter of time - but by then they'll likely first confiscate gold or buy it at artificially low prices.
