Carly Fiorina, a former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, had an operation on Monday after receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer.

Ms. Fiorina has an “excellent prognosis for a full recovery,” Deborah Bowker, her chief of staff, said in a statement. Ms. Fiorina learned she had breast cancer on Feb. 20 and underwent the procedure at Stanford Hospital in California.

Ms. Fiorina, 54, led Hewlett-Packard for more than five years and oversaw its $18 billion takeover of Compaq Computer. She was ousted in February 2005 after a dispute with H.P.’s board. Recently, she was an economic adviser to the Republican presidential candidate, John McCain.

“Her first priority is her health, but she does look forward to getting back out there as soon as possible,” Ms. Bowker said. Ms. Fiorina will start a course of chemotherapy at Stanford and intends to restrict her activities and air travel over the next few months, she said.

Ms. Fiorina is head of Carly Fiorina Enterprises, which promotes global economic development projects and helps women in poverty-stricken countries, according to her Web site.
