Re: "there are polls all over the place, and you're telling me they strictly adhere to rigorous scientific standards and controls?"

Did I ever say "all"?????????

(No, I don't think so!)

SURE there are plenty of FAKE 'polls' (such as 'push polls', Web 'pols', etc.), bogus bits of either pure entertainment or else deliberate propaganda meant to influence like advertising does.

But --- to my way of thinking, (and despite the sad fact they these scams can get away with calling what they are doing a 'poll' because not that many people will call them on it), only a proper scientific sampling effort should be known as a "poll".

(And --- even there, when rigorous efforts are made to follow valid statistical sampling methodology --- unintentional sampling and confounding problems can leak in and bias the results.... No area of science relying upon statistical samplings can escape such considerations.)
