The pilot who landed the aircraft on the Hudson wasn't heroic.

Agree.

Simply a highly trained professional doing his job while at the peak of his powers.

I've been doing my job for decades, honing my skills every day, little by little. Knowing what's important is second nature to me. I can evaluate most cases quickly, accurately determine their weak and strong points and tell you what the probable ultimate result will be within an hour.

What the pilot did, what I do and what you no doubt did very well at BP are not heroics but the exercise of a highly developed set of skills.

In any event, real heroism is easy, it's the humdrum [what a wonderful word, must determine its source; hums like a drum? a drum that hums?] that's hard.

Humdrone, a droning hum? A humming drone, more likely.
