Sam, I didn't place quotes around that statement, you did in response to my post. Listed below are a few examples of statements made by the Obama administration, with a list of over 200 economists who signed a petition in disagreement. These are not fringe partisan conservative economists, or wild eyed radio personalities. They represent Universities around the country and some of the best economics professors in the nation. If a select handfull of them were hired by a new college, they would immediately have a top-flight Economics Department.
The point is the Obama Administration, and the media, seem to believe there is no disagreement that more government spending is a way to improve our economic performance, and the truth is far from it. Lastly, I doubt the Obama adminstration could present a similar list of economists who support their spending agenda as the cure for our economic problems.
"There is no disagreement that we need action by our government, a recovery plan that will help to jumpstart the economy." — PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA, JANUARY 9 , 2009
“Most economists, almost unanimously, recognize that…when you have the kind of problem we have right now…that government is an important element of introducing some additional demand into the economy.”
Vice President Joe Biden said the following:
"Every economist, as I've said, from conservative to liberal, acknowledges that direct government spending on a direct program now is the best way to infuse economic growth and create jobs".
-------------------------------------------------------------
With all due respect Mr. President, that is not true. Notwithstanding reports that all economists are now Keynesians and that we all support a big increase in the burden of government, we do not believe that more government spending is a way to improve economic performance. More government spending by Hoover and Roosevelt did not pull the United States economy out of the Great Depression in the 1930s. More government spending did not solve Japan's "lost decade" in the 1990s. As such, it is a triumph of hope over experience to believe that more government spending will help the U.S. today. To improve the economy, policy makers should focus on reforms that remove impediments to work, saving, investment and production. Lower tax rates and a reduction in the burden of government are the best ways of using fiscal policy to boost growth.
