You are quite right about the backbone problems. Here is a recent story from my ISP techie:

"But here is a little reality check for people who think they can get
100K/s transfer rates to the net. I currently have a dual channel
ISDN connection at 128K. I can transfer at maximum 15KB/sec
with both channels. The problem is that it is rare to even get
10KB/sec to anywhere on the net these days once you get onto the US backbone. Most sites get only 5-6KB/s if you're lucky. The majority are around 3KB/s. The fact of the matter is that the internet is
badly overloaded."

Ouch. This doesn't bode well for the future of the NC / NetPC units that aren't connected to a LAN.
