THat is SO interesting (about older daughter and Lent and the rituals etc).

As you know, ours were raised in the church, and it didn't take at all. We all kind of left at once when they hit the teen years. We sort of looked at each other one Sunday and said, hey, why are we doing this, and everyone admitted they had had all these doubts and didn't really buy the whole Christian thing, but we were all doing what we thought we were supposed to. I kept singing in the church choir because for me it was what I loved.

It was kind of awkward the other night at the Ian McEwan talk. We were with two other couples, both very committed Christians, the kind that do missionary work in Africa, and when McEwan said he was an atheist and believed that he acted from the same moral framework as a Christian, the audience applauded. I didn't because I realized I was sitting between the two women and that would not be tactful, but Dan started to applaud, and then he realized and pretended to scratch his nose instead. hahahahahaha.
I noticed that both women had crossed their legs AND their arms when he talked about this.

Didn't Madalyn Murray O'Hare's son become a very outspoken Christian?
I dunno about this kid..... as I said he's like a certain type of theatre kid-- the ones that just HAVE to be in the spotlight. He may wind up losing the meaning but maintaining the act. I hope not.
