If I had not I would not have found the part about colonial era.

Forget about the colonial era....its has nothing to do with the moniker. The connection between the schools is that they have ivy growing on their walls.....hence the term Ivy League. That's it. Otherwise it was a sports designation....like the Pac-10 as Ten aptly pointed out.
