A small rural population has it's draw backs. While you may have a bit more land, you also have to protect your property. Don't count on the police to arrive any time soon. You may encounter theft of equipment, food or livestock, or simply break into your house and take whatever or do whatever. But then you probably have a gun and a dog to go with it. You might have a creek or some water source. Maybe you have a well with a solar battery for pump back up.

In the city you are limited with food growing. Do you really know your neighbor? Water may be hard to get due to lack of money to make repairs, because the factory that used to make that part has closed it's doors. You may have to resort to storing rain water. The police won't be of much help, they will be too busy dealing with other crimes, theft, gangs or simply trying to fend for themselves! (i.e. Katrina)

If one was smart, get be prepared, have a plan. Having a years worth of food would be a start. If you don't have that, use barter items. We are living in uncertain times. You better have a gun. When people get hungry, people get desperate. Desperate people do desperate things.

Gold may or may not come in handy. A can of beans and rice may be worth more than gold.
