Pragmatist and socialist are pretty much mutually exclusive.

Well not totally, I suppose being socialist may be politically pragmatic in certain situations, but its not pragmatic in a larger sense.

I am a liberal and very pragmatic. Since socialism is one or two steps further left, I see no reason why a socialist can not be pragmatic. In fact, I think President Lulu of Brazil is very much a pragmatist.
