Maybe. But my prof. at Sam Houston in software engineering was totally convinced that writing sorts in COBOL was the future. I argued with him in class. I flunked the class.

Well, sorts are an interesting bit of the history of algorithms and there was a period during which I was fascinated with them. And most people who studied COBOL or FORTRAN had to write one or two of them somewhere along the line -- a bubble sort as an assignment if nothing else.

I'm sure some people use sorts today, but in the kind of work I do you would never explicitly call one. They're long gone I guess.
