Omnibus Passes [David Freddoso]

Add another $410 billion to the spending spree. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D, Nev.) found 62 votes for passage. Sen. David Vitter's (R, La.) amendment, the most serious obstacle to the bill's passage, was tabled on a 52-45 vote. As I anticipated yesterday, Reid had given his members sufficient cover by proposing a separate bill just like it, to end automatic pay-hikes for lawmakers. (Reid's bill could still pass the Senate, but as Vitter pointed out, it will probably never reach the House floor, so members will likely get their next raise in 2011.)

Update: Sen. Jeff Sessions' (R-Ala.) amendment on e-verify also came very close — it was tabled on a 50-47 vote. By contrast, the amendment to save the District of Columbia's Opportunity Scholarship program was soundly defeated. Unless President Obama vetoes the bill, two of his daughters' schoolmates will probably have to leave Sidwell Friends and go back to a sub-par D.C. public school.
