While that (cost reduction) is the likely trend of technological innovation (even in oil and coal), the extent and duration of such trends is unknown. Accordingly its mistaken to simply assume that technology will necessarily make economical tomorrow what isn't today.

It's a damn good assumption in an immature industry.

On the other hand exploration for oil has harvested all the "low hanging fruit". The other new supply to replace dwindling reserves will be harder to reach, and therefore more expensive regardless of tech improvements.

You have one tech getting more expensive and one getting cheaper.... doesn't take much to figure out what's going to happen.
