So you would have our young people die to protect our ability to put junkies in jail? The US has lost the war on drugs. We can keep fighting something that has never worked and never will. The drug cartels want the drugs to stay against the law. That is where they make their money. If the stuff wasn't against the law they wouldn't be able to sell their products here. Corrupt police want them to stay against the law. Drugs are a legal cash cow for police departments. There are many officers that couldn't make ends meet if they didn't have their weekly skim. These officers go broke if they legalize drugs. So the police and drug lords are in agreement. Everyone else gets caught in the crossfire.
