Ted, > The "brick wall" is mostly about budget shortages and poor pay.

Great, then let's raise taxes and pay the teachers $200K/year. Problem solved.

The learning environment in the schools will dramatically improve, the gang bangers will go elsewhere, and the teaching profession will become rewarding again.

Do you think kids should have computers; that there should be computers in every classroom? Do you think schools should have roofs that don't leak? Do you think they should not look like a prison? Do you think broken windows should be prepared? Do you think its fine when things are broken in the classroom and have not been repaired?

Many of our poorest schools are in districts with the neediest kids. You don't think those kids know they are getting shortchanged.

And finally, teaching is an exhausting profession......burnout is always a very real possibility. The best teachers often leave after a few years because for the same amount of hours they can be making 2-3 times more than what they are making as teachers. Some of the good teachers do remain.....but most are just average. Nothing wrong with average but its much harder for kids to get motivated by average teachers.
