Elmer, re: Intel CPU plans for 500 MHz and above.

Intel is supposed to intro the first Deschutes in 2H '98 and the first speeds will be 350 and 400 MHz. With that intro date it is very dubious that the 500 MHz version will appear during 1998.

The next faster processor, the Katmai has recently been pushed to 1999. Read what Boot Magazine (Nov'97) editor Andrew Sanchez said to a reader question:

Q: In the boot 12 Tracking Sheet you said MMX2 was coming Q1'98. But PC Computing said MMX2 -- code named Katmai -- was coming out the end of '98. Who's right?

A: When we first heard about MMX2, it was coming in Q1 of '98. But, like all new technologies, that date has slipped quite a bit.

Intel reps haven't even "officially" confirmed the existence of MMX2, but if any new technologies were to come out, we wouldn't expect it until Katmai.

And with Deschutes/Slot 2 coming in Q3 of 1998, we doubt Intel will saturate its high-end market by shipping Katmai in 1998. Our best estimates place Katmai/MMX2 in 1999...if we're lucky.

AMD's version of MMX2 and IDT's version of MMX2 will be out and fully supported by Microsoft Windows 95 Direct X and Open-GL, and by Windows '98 a full year before Intel's MMX2 by this estimate.
