I'm assuming that most Americans become diabetic if they live long enough. I think it's pretty much inevitable with the American lifestyle. Heart disease, too.

It's more than possible that with a lifetime of exercise (and a decent diet I suppose) that that person would never develop diabetes.

I agree. Many/most people could hold it at bay with preventive measures. I'm trying. I'm already somewhat insulin resistant. Would have been an easier and more promising fight had I recognized the risk earlier in life. Too soon old, too late smart. I have always been a good exerciser but I ate the diet recommended by the experts. I was so committed that I was even a vegetarian for a few years and I generously supported the Nutrition Action folks. It turns out that the experts were wrong and continue to be wrong.

I think your focus on exercise seriously underestimates the importance of diet.
