Tougher checks to greet travellersOfficials at airports, international rail stations and ferry ports will have to be supplied with credit card details, holiday contact numbers, travel plans and email addresses, as well as any details of previous missed flights.

... Anyone entering or leaving Britain will be forced to hand over the information as soon as they pay for their ticket and it will be shared among police, customs and security services for at least 24 hours before a journey is scheduled to take place.

Those deemed to be suspicious will be turned away.

The plans were unveiled as part of a £650 million contract was signed by ministers yesterday to introduce electronic checks on passengers.

The deal, signed by the arms manufacturer Raytheon Systems, will lead to major changes in the processes passengers have to undergo at ports, airports and international rail terminals.

The project, known as e-Borders, will cost £1.2 billion, a Home Office spokesman said.

Raytheon will lead the technology project, providing machines such as passport and fingerprint scanners, as part of a consortium named Trusted Borders."
