Data is cached almost exclusively as a result of router overload. So the vastly limiting straw size and weak link is the speed and efficiency of backbone routing. If, as srvhap referenced, an average throughput for the net is currently about 40Kbps ( techstocks.com ),
increasing local bw to Mbps would have no effect at best, and in larger deployments would tax net routers even more.

<Of course this is assuming ADSL data requirments is the same as life before ADSL.>

Of course, this is the argument FOR ADSL, that the data requirements will skyrocket (eventually) with apps that are bandwidth heavy... crunch/squish...

We'll get there, just not for awhile.
