Ok. I remember a long tirade in Nature a few years back on the subject. But, Brits are known for their adherence to tradition...

There is also an occasional tirade over the use of the phrase "data point". Now, they do have a point, the singular is 'datum', but it is a bit anal to get worked up over the subject.
