If merging MIPS and SPARC is easy, I think Karl has a very good point in selling MIPS and then merge with Sun.

Merging MIPS with SPARC wouldn't be easy. The arch. just aren't that similar. The compiler technology is completely different, AFAIK.

Several things are worth noting here. MIPS is a much more successful chip arch. than Sparc is. Sparc has lately been selling vapor. A 600mhz CPU is about as likely to come out of Sun in the next year as MSFT is to be bought by Netscape. Not too long, and the 300Mhz R12k will appear, with specInt numbers comparable to 600mhz Alpha, and specFP numbers better than 600mhz Alpha. I'm not saying SGI won't sell MIPS, but the idea that MIPS is 'luggage' or 'baggage' is stupid.

I believe the cultures of Sun and SGI are very compatible.

You're stoned. Quite a few present SGI employees are past Sun employees that couldn't stand the dictatorial bureaucracy at Sun. Sun management would get rocks thrown at them at SGI.

Merging with Apple is almost a Seinfeld thought.

Here, we agree.
