My understanding is that they are likely to get wiped out, but its not a 100% thing. If anything is left after making deals with the creditors the shareholders may retain some reduced ownership or if the company is shut down they might get some payment.

Probably they'll get nothing. That combined with the fact that if they do get anything it won't be a real windfall, would make it seem to me that the only reason to buy shares would be to try to dump them on "the greater fool" for a profit.
