( BW)(IOMEGA)(IOMG) Iomega's New Tape Drive Sets New Standards in Backup Affordability with 1-Step PC Insurance
Business Editors/Computer Writers
ROY, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 1996--Iomega Corporation (NASDAQ: IOMG) today announced the Ditto 2GB drive, a new two gigabyte tape backup solution which has enough capacity to protect most of today's computers on one cartridge. Utilizing its own tape technology, Iomega will also offer Ditto 2GB cartridges. For pennies per megabyte, Ditto 2GB is one of the easiest and most cost effective solutions for consumers to insure information on their computers. Shipping now, the Ditto 2GB has an estimated street price of $199.95 for the external version and $149.95 for the internal version. Ditto 2GB is a portable, light weight tape backup system that allows consumers to easily and quickly insure the contents of their hard drive by saving and protecting their important files, including home finance information, tax returns, photos and graphics. Consumers simply click the 1-step icon and continue working while the Ditto 2GB drive saves their valuable files in the background. "With this product, Iomega is setting new standards which focus on the customer's current needs and wants," said Crawford Del Prete, vice president of storage at International Data Corporation. "With Ditto 2GB, Iomega has raised the bar by defining precedent-setting levels of price and capacity." Sony Recording and Energy Group (RMEG) will manufacture Ditto 2GB tape cartridges, utilizing Iomega's 2GB format, while Iomega will manufacture the Ditto 2GB drives. Drives and cartridges will be sold under the Iomega Ditto 2GB brand. Ditto 2GB offers two gigabytes of protection for a price less than current tape cartridges on the market. Ditto 2GB cartridges are available for as low as $19.95, as compared to competitive cartridges which cost $30 to $35.
New Drive and Media Standards
"The model in the PC industry has been to increase performance while lowering cost. However, the tape industry has not followed suit," said Michael L. Joseph, director of Ditto business marketing. "By creating our own tape format, Iomega can break all the rules by offering customers what they want - the right capacity, at the right price." Ditto 2GB offers the same enhanced features as Iomega's other Ditto products, while adding a variety of new features designed to make it even easier for consumers to protect their important information: 1-Step Backup: Offering true 1-step point-and-click backup, a single click of the mouse on the 1-step icon backs up the crucial information on the hard drive while the user keeps on working. Ditto 2GB will even remember to backup when the user forgets. Easy to Install: Consumers can go from box to back up in about five minutes with Ditto 2GB's new enhanced software on CD-ROM, which includes a fun and informative multi-language installation, allowing them to choose between seven foreign languages for truly global flexibility. Simply plug the Ditto 2GB external into the printer port (with pass through capability for the printer), while the internal version easily fits into any 5 1/4" drive bay. Universal Support: Ditto 2GB is specifically designed to read and write Ditto 2GB cartridges and will also read other tape formats created on Iomega drives, including QIC-80, QIC-80W, TR-1, QIC-3010, QIC-3020, TR-2 and TR-3. Extensive Software Compatibility: Compatible with Windows '95, Windows 3.1 or higher, DOS, Novell and Lantastic. Windows NT software upgrade is available as an accessory option.
