Al Qaeda has never been close to overthrowing the Saudi regime. Not going to happen.

As far as the value, I'd have to wonder exactly the same thing. What is the value of us weaning ourselves off of oil, so that we aren't dependent on a commodity that has the potential for extremist to use as a weapon against us? Surely that is a better use of our money than defending the status quo on oil usage, which continues to leave us dependent on bad regimes and the risk of Al Qaeda gaining control.

In my business, we often talk about the 5 Whys when we are trying to identify root causes. I think you have asked the first or second why, but you stopped there. I've asked the whys until there are no more whys, which is why I focus on renewable energy. At the end of the day, if you want to solve the root cause, then we need to wean ourselves off of the oil.
