As far as the conflicts ongoing with terrorists of various stripes... I have posted here many times, and in great detail, my opinions.

Suffice it to say, I believe that the rules of warfare have not changed much throughout all of history.

As Sun Tsu taught - knowing your enemy is the first necessary step to defeating him... and 'divide and conquer' is always a high-probability strategy to pursue.

(For example, understanding the significant differences and tensions that exist between Sunnis and Shia, the better to be able to leverage and exploit those rivalries.)

Mao's dictum about 'revolutionaries' also very much applies still --- that they are like 'fish', and the 'water' they swim in is the general population. Without acceptance and support (resupply, material aid and succor) from the PUBLIC they CANNOT ENDURE.

With specific regard to Afghanistan, I'm sure that Pakistan is the answer. Without Taliban safe harbor and succor and Intelligence support from Pakistan (official and unofficial) the Taliban threat cannot prevail.

WITH such Pakistani support they can out-wait anyone - even the US.

(The 'key' there may be the nationalist aspirations of the Pastun Tribe --- the largest ethnic group in both Afghanistan and also in Pakistan... and currently divided by the artificial borderline drawn by the British....)

Now, as to the larger issue of the global economic crisis - although related to the ongoing wars insofar as BOTH are draining our finances - that problem is sufficiently complicated enough on it's own to require entirely different policy answers....

Still... the *one* thing the two very different problems have in common is the wise old saying: "when you find yourself in a hole, the first step toward getting out is to stop digging."
