Well what happens is that when you try to undo the damage, interest rates go way up. This destroys any advance that equity markets may have made up to that point. It also causes economic contraction that results in calls for wage and price controls instead of interest rate increases. Volcker pulled it off but it wasn't as bad as what we have now.
